Meet the Maker Whisky & Beer Pairing "Boilermaker" Event - An exploration of two loves, brewing and whisky.

Destination Cellars is excited to announce that we will be sampling the full range of the newly released beer cask series from Hobart Whisky and as an added bonus we will sample them alongside their corresponding beers. Hosting the evening will be Head Distiller Ben James & GM John Jarvis, as well as Todd Morrison from Destination Cellars. If you love beer and whisky, then lock in Saturday evening May 29th at 7pm for this very special event.  It will be held in the authentic surrounds of the Hobart Whisky Distillery tasting room.

For the past twelve months Hobart Whisky have been working on a barrel aged beer program for pilot batch brewing. Their intentions were to make good beer, that also complimented their style of whisky. . . We’re excited to introduce to you the range of limited beer cask finished whisky alongside their tasty beers.

This is a rare opportunity to have a beer and whisky from the same distillery on offer, a real nod to the skills of Head Distiller (and brewer) Ben. 

Here is the tasty line up with notes from Hobart Whisky:

Smoky Rye Red Ale - It was critical that we carefully produce this beer to work with a whisky. It’s made from Golden Promise, Munich Crystal Malt, Rye, Scottish Peated Malt, and Smoked Barley, producing a very malt driven beer. An ABV of 9.2% and IBU of 14.2.

Smoky Rye Red Ale Cask Finished Whisky 53.6%abv - The cask performed and produced a whisky that highlights all of the aforementioned grains, while retaining the sweet bourbon cask notes from the initial maturation. A light smoke carrying through from the smoked barley, and depth coming from the small amount of peated grain. A sweet, malty, buttery and viscous whisky, quite rich and heavy.

Imperial Stout Cask Beer - We’ve had a lot of fun producing this beer, consisting of predominantly Maris Otter, Oats, Biscuit Malt, Roasted Wheat, Roasted Barley, Black Malt and Caramunich. An ABV of 10.4% and IBU of 8.4.

Imperial Stout Cask Finished Whisky 56.3%abv - A rich and oily whisky, with plenty of roasted grains, chocolate, marzipan, and a hint of coffee. We like to think that we’ve struck a perfect balance between the malty sweetness of the stout, oak and spirit.

Ginger Beer - A ginger beer cask has been something we’ve wanted to do for a while. However, It was crucial to us that we struck a perfect balance between the ginger beer and mature whisky that went into it. This was achieved by designing the beer recipe with ingredients that would work with the cask and whisky. Largely consisting of pale and crystal malt, Tasmanian leatherwood honey, fresh ginger and lime with Idaho 7 hops. It had an IBU of 3.2 and ABV of 9.8%.

Ginger Beer Cask Finished Whisky 53.2%abv - The whisky is sweet with notes of honeycomb, toffee, and malty vanilla, complemented by notes of ginger butter cake and gingerbread biscuits.

Porter - The Porter recipe largely consists of Pale Malt, Crystal Malt, Chocolate Malt, Roasted Wheat Malt and Molasses, with a small amount of Magnum hops.

Porter Beer Cask Finish Whisky 54.2%abv - This whisky has been matured in 40L American oak ex-bourbon casks for three and a half years before finishing for ten months in an 80L cask that has been filled with a Porter beer brewed by our own head distiller, Ben James. A whisky that is sweet, with plenty of roasted grains. Stewed fruits, rich chocolate and burnt toffee on the palate and a medium, sweet nutty finish.

Tickets are $75 per person and must be booked in advance as seats are limited. 

You will receive a dram of Hobart Whisky Signature on arrival and have a guided tour of the distillery before heading upstairs to the tasting room. You will also have access to a limited amount of bottles of the beer cask releases of Hobart Whisky on the night, plus great stories, finger food and good times will be provided.
