Yamazaki Sherry Cask 2016 was a limited release of just 5,000 bottles, with only a handful filtering through to Australia. The 2013 bottling was awarded World Whisky of the Year in Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2015 and this release was one of the most sought-after drams of 2016. In fact Murray commented that it was “near indescribable genius...and a work of art”.
Crafted by the legendary Shinji Fukuyo on Suntory, who went to Spain to source his casks directly, choosing everything from the oak, observing the charring process and seeing them filled with sherry. He returned three years later to select the casks that he would bring back to Japan to age this exquisite expression in.
The 2016 release largely consists of the 2013 blend with two more years of ageing, as well as some other choice malts aged up to 25 years.
The 2016 edition of Yamazaki Sherry Cask is bottled at 48% abv and has no age statement.
